that lets you increase its painfully small storage space by installing an off-the-shelf M.2 module. But before you go out and buy a new SSD, you want to make sure it’s actually compatible as an expansion drive.
There are a few things to consider when buying an SSD for PS5: Only NVMe PCIe 4.0 drives with a 5,500MB/sec or faster sequential read speed are going to work. You also want to make sure that your extra SSD will actually fit inside the
PS5’s
expansion slot, especially considering that you’ll need a potentially bulky heatsink to keep temperatures in check.

The Corsair MP600 Pro is a step over the other drives in this list. First off, it features a higher 5,500MB/s write speed along with the 7,000MB/s read speed we expect from most PCIe 4.0 drives.
Normally, the Corsair MP600 Pro features a big honking heatsink to help it run cooler and faster for longer than any other SSD. What to Look for in a PS5 SSD
Before you go buying any SSD to install into the PS5 you should know your drive will need to meet a minimum speed requirement, and only certain drives will physically fit in the console. First up, Sony officially recommends users only install a NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD with a
sequential read speed of 5500MB/s or faster
.
Additionally, the physical space of the secondary M.2 SSD slot is fairly narrow and shallow at
110 x 25 x 11.25mm or 4.33 x 0.984 x 0.442 inches
. While that’s not a problem for most M.2 SSDs, Sony has saidy any installed drive will require a heatsink to dissipate any additional heat. Many of these compact SSDs don’t come with an integrated heatsink.
The good news is there are plenty of aftermarket options and you just need to check if they will fit. Sony also

Lastly understand that while these SSDs fit into Sony's requirements, Sony says it cannot guarantee compatibility, basically absolving itself of any responsibility if you run into issues by stating "SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products."
